Term 4 Music Newsletter
Term 4 in the music room is all about hands on instruments!
We have already learnt about some indigenous music artists such as Baker Boy, Kid Laroi and Mitch Tambo, and sung beautiful songs such as "Inanay" from the Torres Strait Islands and "Taba Naba" with actions.
Senior students had a chance to play the Indonesian Gamelan instrument and participate in Indonesian dance as part of the school wide Language week.
The term begins with learning to play all of our new instruments and making friends with our older ones. We will use bells, chimes, boomwhackers and percussion instruments. Students will also be completing some of the classroom activities such as class play-alongs, music making with friends, and just getting our hands on instruments!
Preps will further their pitch, beat and rhythm work by participating in games and songs, as well as learning how to play marimba notes.
Grades 1 and 2 will learn to echo, repeat and read music whilst playing together, and learning to stop and start playing with the group.
The 3-6 students will be playing Ukulele, Guitar, Bass and Drumkit. They will consolidate their skills in reading music charts by playing in their own “bands” and working on playing together.
We will focus on singing and have the students learn many new and wonderful songs. We look forward to our music making in term 4

Term 4 Newsletter: Bahasa Indonesia
This term began with our first ever LANGAUGE WEEK here at Lara Lake. Students and teachers alike really enjoyed participating in the incursions, learning Indonesian dance and how to play some of the Gamelan instruments as well as watching traditional shadow puppet theatre (Wayang Kulit) and having a go on the Becaks (Indonesian rickshaws!)
Here is an overview of what students will be learning in the remainder of Term Four.
In Prep, students will learn how to greet people appropriately and ask how they are, count to 10 confidently and be able to say how old they are, join in some Indonesian songs related to numbers, colours and family such as “ Bayi Hiu” (Baby Shark), use colours to describe different objects and compare how Christmas is celebrated in Indonesia and Australia.
In Grade One, students will use the text “Ulat yang lapar sekali” (The Hungry Caterpillar) to reinforce vocabulary related to numbers 0-20, days of the week and fruit. Students will be able to use text comprehension strategies such as activating prior knowledge/ connections / predictions to understand and follow a text in Indonesian and demonstrate their understanding and comprehension of the text through recall and sequencing activities. Students will begin to understand Indonesian has a different word order and use a variety of adjectives and nouns to create noun phrases. Students will also learn about a celebration called Eid and begin to make comparisons to other celebrations they are familiar with.
In Grade Two, students will use games and songs to reinforce colours and numbers to 20 and create a shared book about colours called “Balon Balon Saya” (My balloons)
Students will be able to use adjectives such as colours to describe personal features including hair and eye colour and use the correct Indonesian word order when describing people. Students will learn and understand prepositions through games and activities and create a shared book titled “Di mana domba hijau?” (Where is the green sheep). Students will work collaboratively to create a penjor, which are decorated bamboo poles, used to decorate Balinese homes during a celebration
In Grade Three and Four, students will use a range of adjectives to describe different people and characters from a story. Students will understand why and how Diwali, the festival of light, is celebrated and show understanding of the traditional Indonesian story, the Ramayana, through sequencing activities. Students will work in small groups to perform a short play. Students will also earn about wayang kulit puppets (shadow puppets) and create their own based on the characters from the Ramayana.
In Grade Five and Six, students will learn about Indonesia’s national cloth, Batik and how it is produced as well as plan, draw, design and create a BATIK bag of their own. Students will also create packaging for their BATIK bag using traditional patterns. They will also look at how Christmas is celebrated in Indonesia and be able to create a Christmas card and use an appropriate greeting and salutation in Indonesian. Finally, students will create Batik themed Christmas decorations.
Term 4 Art Newsletter
I cannot believe it is already 4th Term. Heaps of things happening within Visual Arts.
Our School’s Community Christmas Tree is being decorated just after the holidays by our ES staff and selected students and will be on display at our office for a short time and then in the Mall from November as part of the Geelong Christmas display.
Our Year 6 students recently participated in an International Peace Poster competition a special poster displaying their thoughts and ideas about “Leading with Compassion”. The posters are externally judged, we should have results soon. Photos will be placed onto Compass so everyone can see them soon. I know you will agree with me to say we have very talented artists.
Over the next couple of weeks in Art students will be bringing their Art folio home. This is a collection of their artwork from this year. This is a treasured moment in which families can display and keep children’s artwork for years to come. It has the benefit of keeping all their artwork in one place that is easy to store.
What’s happening in your Year Level:
Students in Grade 5 and 6 students are investigating clay and modelling techniques. Grade 3 and 4 students are learning about indigenous art through photography artists such as Dennis Golding and Kent Morris and then learn toning techniques to create highlights and shades. Grade 1 and 2 students are continuing their learning about art elements (line, shape, colour, space, form, value and texture) and exploring composition and learning about warm and cool tones. Preps are experimenting with collage and learning how to wrap using threads then moving into experimenting with modelling and clay– lots of hands-on fine motor skills use here. They will create a beautiful pinch pot, one to be treasured, I’m sure.
Please remember hats for this term and feel free to contact any of your child’s Art teachers if you have any questions.
The Art teachers for term 4 are Susan Torriero, Rob Turner, Ashleigh Hardman, Jess Amezdroz and Melanie Grattidge

Grade 3 - Grade 6
The Grade 3, 4, 5 and 6 will have the opportunity to participate in the beep test with the aim of improving their previous score which they did earlier in the year. In the first half of the term the students will be developing their striking and fielding skills and learning particular strategies in order for them to have play correctly and have success when participating in sports such as cricket, softball and t-ball. In the second half of Term 4, net and wall sports will be introduced such as tennis and badminton.
Future Clinics
All students will be participating in a free ‘Hip Hop’ lesson which is being taught by a Melbourne dance company called Stomp.
The Grade Preps, 1, 2 and 4 will participate in a four-week tennis clinic which is conducted by professional tennis coaches. The final session the students will be bussed to the Lara Tennis Courts to put their learnt skills into practice on an actual tennis court.
The Grade 3’s will have the opportunity to learn about being healthy and active when the GMHBA Healthy Heroes come to Lara Lake. It is an initiative which is run by The Geelong Cats.
On Friday November 18th the Preps, Grade 1 and Grade 2 will participate in a Junior Tabloid Sports Carnival which is very exciting. Please fill in the consent form and payment forms on Compass.
Soccer and Badminton clinics could also be in the wind for the Grade 5 and 6 students but presently the school is waiting on confirmation for these sports to proceed.
As you can see, the Lara Lake students are extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to participate and be up skilled in such a variety of different sports and to put the ‘icing on the cake’ there is no cost to the students or the school.
If you have any questions about what is happening in PE during Term 4, please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s PE teacher.
