Grade 6 Term 4 Curriculum News

This Term Newsletter will provide you with information about your child’s upcoming teaching and learning experiences in the new term. There is also plenty of additional information provided via Compass throughout the school year, so please make a point of touching base regularly.

Welcome to Term 4 2022, our Grade 6 student’s final Term at Lara Lake Primary School. We hope all of the students end the year on a high by demonstrating great leadership and maturity before moving onto Secondary School. We are extremely proud of how the Grade 6 students have modelled the Lara Lake Way through buddy programs, Play is the Way helpers and the running and supervision of the GaGa Pit.

Term 4 brings with it a number of exciting experiences, unique to Grade 6 students. In the second last week of term, our students will participate in high school transition programs at their chosen school. This will assist our students to familiarise themselves with the school they will be attending, meet some of their teachers and participate in a range of subjects that will be available to them next year. We will also be holding our graduation towards the end of the term, which will be an amazing opportunity for students to reflect on their time at Lara Lake Primary School. More details to follow.

Literacy

Nurturing our students’ love of reading and writing is a passion for all of the Grade 6 teachers at LLPS. This term, our students will engage in a unit of work analysing how authors use language to build emotional connection with the story or theme, through the analysis of poetry. They will also continue to develop their reading stamina, vocabulary and use of comprehension strategies to support their understanding by summarising, inferring and asking questions. Through engagement in the Reader’s Workshop, students will also develop their knowledge of world issues through a range of different experiences.

Our Writer’s Workshop program will continue to offer opportunities for students to pursue their interests, to develop their writing style and find their ‘voice’. We will be refining the students’ knowledge of the Writing Cycle through modelled, shared and guided experiences. Students will also engage with their Writer’s Notebooks to plan, draft and publish a range of texts, identifying their audience and purpose for writing, as well as the key structures and language features of various text types, including poetry.

Students will understand that spelling is influenced by a combination of the sounds, the history and the meaning of the word.

Numeracy

In Mathematics, students will continue to develop their understanding of Number by exploring the Order of Operations (BIDMAS). They will be supported through a range of problem solving experiences to consolidate and transfer their knowledge of learnt concepts into real-world scenarios. Students will consolidate their knowledge of 3D shapes, their properties and the nets that make prisms and pyramids, as well as being able to identify, estimate and measure angles. There will be a continued focus on estimation, problem solving and reasoning, to ensure students are thinking deeply and challenging themselves in their learning.

Inquiry

This term we will continue to learn about the factors that contribute to health, safety and general wellbeing. They will identify the differences between emotional, mental and physical health and examine how community wellbeing is supported by celebrating diversity and connecting to the natural and built environment.

The iPads will continue to be used daily, therefore it is imperative that these are at school and fully charged every day.

HOMEWORK
We ask for your continued support in ensuring that homework is completed regularly and handed in on the due dates. It is expected that students read at home (minimum of 4 days for at least 30 minutes) and complete at least 40 minutes of maths homework from the Google Classroom slides each week. This may also be supplemented with Essential Assessment Learning Modules, or other specific materials supplied by your child’s teacher.

Each year level team has provided their families with a detailed newsletter such as this. If you are interested in reading about all the exciting things happening across the rest of the school, these can be accessed online at our school website from early next week.

Kind regards,
The Grade 6 Team.
