General:
WELCOME TO TERM 4, 2022! We formally welcome Mrs Paige Deacon into our Grade 4 team as Mr Robinson’s replacement for Term 4. It’s been so lovely, welcoming back Mrs Deacon to Lara Lake after her adventures travelling throughout most of this year. Winter has come and gone, though the rain seems to be sticking around! The footy season is over and our staff and students are looking forward to a term filled with fun and learning! We can’t believe there is only one last remaining term before your children head up in the senior school and Grade 5! Besides the exciting things happening within the classroom, students can look forward to our school camp, we can hardly wait! Towards the end of term, the Grade Fours will once again be participating in our 1-4 Swimming Program so get those bathers, goggles, towels and rash vests ready!
LITERACY
This term in Reading, students will be continuing to participate in daily Independent Reading where they will further strengthen their comprehension strategies to support them to monitor meaning as they read. Reading nightly at home will continue an important part of your child’s routine.
We know we have shared this with you before but DID YOU KNOW that a child who reads for 67.3 minutes a day will read a total of 4,733,000 words a year? This puts them in the 98th percentile rank! This includes any form of reading such as signs, books, notes etc.
In Writing, children will continue to participate in writing workshops with students focussing on writing ‘just right’ texts whilst strengthening their revising and editing skills. We will also continue to celebrate student’s writing success through ongoing classroom ‘Author’s Chair’ share time where students are also provided with valuable peer feedback.
NUMERACY
This term, students will be focusing on developing their understanding of Chance and Data, 2D and 3D shapes, Mapping and Angles. The Four Processes (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division) will continue to be strengthened also. Students will continue to explore these concepts through rich learning tasks and open-ended exploration.
INQUIRY
Throughout the term students will spend time learning about ‘Celebrations’. They will inquire into questions on how learning about celebrations around the world help us to understand others and spend time investigating how they can use the information that we have learnt about the celebration to teach others so they better understand. We will look into how we can seek to understand other people that may be different to us and determine further how we can show that we follow the Golden Rule of ‘treating others as you would like them to treat you?’.
We will continue to embed the school’s prosocial program ‘Play is the Way’, where students will identify their personal strengths and areas of future development. They will suggest strategies for coping with difficult situations, investigate and discuss which behaviours lead to positive relationships with peers, other people at school and in the community. Students will identify and discuss a range of conflict resolution strategies to develop their independence and ability to negotiate positive outcomes to problems.
CAMP WILKIN
The Grade 4 team are very excited about heading off to Camp Wilkin this Term! Our camp is located in Anglesea, a 46 minute bus ride from Lara Lake Primary School. We will be leaving Lara Lake on Monday 21st November at 9.00am and arriving back around 3.00pm on Wednesday 23rd November (Week 8 in Term 4).
Camp Wilkin is an annual Grade 4 camp held in a bush setting in Anglesea. Students will enjoy outdoor activities aimed to provide memorable experiences, aimed at enhancing social networks and Play Is The Way values. Students will be in grouped rotations so that they get the opportunity to try every experience. We have selected some fantastic activities such as low ropes courses, flying fox, leap of faith, mountain bike riding, river kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, beach walks and movie nights, as well as an extra special stop on the last day! Children will also have ‘free time’ with their peers to enjoy all that the camp has to offer, including facilities such as volleyball nets.
A schedule has been created including a set bedtime (lights off by 9pm). This will allow all students the time to try every activity and get a good night sleep each night. Students will be in cabins sleeping approximately 3-6 children per cabin. Working with teachers, students will get to have input as to who they bunk with. There is an ensuite between 4-7 people. The staff will be on yard duty to ensure all students are settled and sleeping. Rest assured, staff will be always close by and available to assist students when needed. For all other camp queries please contact your student’s classroom teacher. We will continue to update as the term progresses.
Each year level team has provided their families with a detailed newsletter such as this. If you are interested in reading about all the exciting things happening across the rest of the school these can be accessed online at our school website from early next week.
Kind Regards,
Simone Confait, Paige Deacon, Ellie Johnson, Blake Freeman and Lauren Maslen.
