CURRICULUM NEWS 2020 – SPECIALISTS
PE
Welcome back everyone! Hope you had a great holiday and kept active. I am excited about the New Year and looking forward to Lara Lake students achieving their best, being healthy and getting active both at school and at home. Once again, the PE program will be asking for parent helpers at different stages of the year, to support the extra curriculum activities that are provided by the school each term.
In term 1, Preps will be introduced to small games and learning about space and how to move around in the first few weeks. The Perceptual Motor Program (PMP) will be run in PE classes this term, which is focused on basic motor skills and learning to work in groups. Some grade 5 students will also be helping the preps in PE for term 1. Grade 1 and 2s will be welcomed back with some familiar games and focusing on working together cooperatively and sportsmanship. The PMP program will also be delivered with activities modified for different ability levels. Grade 3-6 will be concentrating on athletics this term, in preparation for the house athletics day which will be early in term 2. The PE teaching team will also include Mrs Johnson and Mr Wood who will be teaching the PE program to some classes. Please don’t hesitate to contact any of the PE teachers if you have any concerns or questions.

This Term Newsletter will provide you with information about your children’s upcoming teaching and learning experiences in the new term.
These Newsletters are provided to all parents across the school, so that everyone is aware of the great things happening at our school, even if you don’t have a child in this level. Of course, you may choose to read only those Newsletters affecting your children.
There is also plenty of additional information provided via Compass throughout the school year, so please make a point of touching base regularly.
This year in the Performing Arts promises to be an exciting one, with students learning a variety of skills in Music classes, and growing in confidence as they play, sing and move in their weekly classes.
Music will be heard in different areas of the school, with many junior and prep classes to be held in the hall. This will allow us to spread out and make classes even more active and “hands on”!
Senior instrumental, singing and band work will happen in the music room.
As we have in the past, we will be having grade 6 Arts leaders. The speeches and elections will happen alongside the elections for Sports captains later this term. The Arts leaders will be involved in organising lunchtime blackboard concerts, assembly sing-alongs, and whole school events such as “the Big Sing”.
Once again I am amazed at the talent and enthusiasm of our students at Lara Lake. I love to hear that a student has taken up singing, dance or instrument lessons, or has been teaching him/herself how to play a song at home. I feel privileged to be able to teach at LLPS.

Happy New Year! In the Art room, we are looking forward to a great year of art exhibitions in our School Gallery, art excursions and great creativity. We are starting the year off with a whole school collaborative piece inspired by the street artist Thank You X, make sure you look for it in our school.
Please bring in a box of tissues for the specialist programs – often children need tissues and the specialist areas are often forgotten about. Just drop it into the art room and I will distribute them around to all specialist areas.
This term, our new Preps are beginning their art journey learning about lines, colours, shape and mark-making.
Grade 1 & 2 will express themselves through self-portraits, exploring ideas through drawing, lines as a pattern, texture and movement and combining and connecting shapes to create art.
Grade 3 & 4 – will continue their learning and discovery of Art Elements and Principles to create artwork and will express ‘Who I am’ in a self-portrait.
Grade 5 & 6 will begin with learning about using lines to create a value scale. They will explore the artistic style of surrealism and create artwork around an animal theme and learn about proportion so they can create a realistic portrait of themselves.
Please, it is imperative your child has an art smock at school (everyone from Prep to Grade 6). We use different art materials throughout the year that could get the uniform dirty or stained. Make sure it is named and has a grade on it and it gets to your child’s teacher asap.
Our colourful display of artwork will be in the main corridor in time. Please plan a visit and talk with your child about their artwork and the work of other students. I will let you know when artwork is up in the gallery via Compass. The Art teaching team this year includes Mrs Torriero, Mrs Johnson and Mrs Millard. Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s Art teacher if you have any concerns or questions in regards to your child.

INDONESIAN
This year, P-2 students will get the exciting opportunity to learn Indonesian in their very own Indonesian room. Each class will spend a day learning Indonesian through a range of engaging activities such as songs, stories and games. This term the focus will be on identifying where Indonesia is, learning some facts about Indonesia and comparing it to some aspects of Australian life. Students will also explore greetings and introductions in Indonesian as well as learning cultural norms such as how to address elders and be respectful. Students will learn how to count and identify some basic colours. Class teachers will also begin to integrate Indonesian into their own classrooms in order to support and consolidate the students experience. The focus in all lessons is on speaking and listening. The school’s goal is to increase Indonesian across year level over the coming years.
