Lara Lake Primary School Records Significant Improvement in NAPLAN Results as reported by Olivia Shying, Geelong Advertiser, April 10, 2019 5:11pm

LARA Lake Primary School pupils are continuing to excel in maths and numeracy with the school recording improved NAPLAN results in 2018.

Principal Steve Durkin said the school had experienced “significant improvement across the board”, with last year’s Grade 3 and 5 pupils showing marked improvement.

Lara Lake recorded above average results for reading and writing for Grade 5 when compared with like schools; and above average for reading, writing and numeracy in Grade 3 when compared with similar students, NAPLAN data being released today reveals.

Mr Durkin said a strong focus on staff and professional development had enabled teachers to develop the skills needed to foster academic excellence.

“There’s been a lot of work in developing our staff expertise at this school over the last few years,” Mr Durkin said.

“The leadership of the school have tried to get out of the way of teachers as much as possible and let them get on with the job in terms of teaching the curriculum.”

He said the school’s growing population was a constant challenge. “We are trying to manage high expectations in a growing school where you are getting new staff and new kids,” Mr Durkin said.

He said a new teaching model for reading classes had been so successful it was now likely to be rolled out in writing and numeracy classes.

“Across the board we’ve had significant improvement from where we were.

“Particularly with last year’s Grade 5s — where they were in reading compared to where they were in Grade 3, the growth was enormous,” he said. He said all students at Lara Lake knew their capabilities and were committed to doing the best they could.
